It’s hard to believe that every night in Australia, there are more than 100,000 that have nowhere to go to stay warm and have a good night’s sleep.

In Sydney alone, there are over 800 homeless people who struggle just to stay warm as chilly night temperatures set in.

Not-for-profit charity Kids Giving Back has launched a fundraiser called ‘Warm-4-Winter’, encouraging kids to raise money to purchase discounted beanies and mittens for the homeless.

“This initiative is about providing an opportunity for our young people to have a chance to fundraise but create something that’s quite tangible and see the outcome of their fundraising straight away,” Kids Giving Back CEO Robyn Munro told Weekend Sunrise.

“They’re going to be raising funds and buying beanies and mittens for people who are currently living on the streets,” she said.

Kids giving back

The Kids Giving Back organisation offers programs for children aged between 6 and 18 years, providing hands-on experience through cooking programs, school holiday activities and school programs.

The programs provide meaningful opportunities for young people to help some of the most vulnerable people in the community.

Since 2012, 26,500 kids have participated in Kids Giving Back programs.

Leo, Skye and Adam are three of those volunteers.

“It’s really nice to help people that are less fortunate than us because it gives a sense of what they’ve been going through,” Skye told Weekend Sunrise.

“It means so much to them for any support,” Adam said.

Helping hand

Anyone can help Kids Giving Back with their Warm4Winter campaign.

“We’d love people to chip in and join us in raising those funds,” Munro said.

“We know that every dollar goes towards creating these opportunities for beanies…100 per cent Merino wool, so we’re helping our Australian farmers as well, to get people warm and let our kids feel empowered to make a difference in the community.
