Scarlett Johansson has criticized the “hyper-sexualization” of her character spider in the Marvel film Iron Man 2. Black Widow, aka Natasha Romanoff, first appeared in the 2010 film. “You remember at Iron Man 2 and while it absolutely was really fun and had lots of great moments in it, the character is so sexualized, you know?” the actress told Collider. “Really talked about like she’s a chunk of something, sort of a possession or a thing or whatever.” Black Widow has since become a big figure within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in seven films, and can star in her own standalone movie next month. ‘A piece of meat’ Speaking about the character’s evolution, the actor said she was treated like “a piece of ass” initially. “And Tony [Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr] even refers to her as something like that at one point. What does he say? ‘I want some’. “Yeah, and at one point calls her a chunk of meat, and perhaps at that point that really felt sort of a compliment. you recognize what I mean?” She added that her self-worth was “probably measured against that sort of comment” – about her physical appearance – previously, but that she had grown to grasp her own self-worth better since becoming a mother. “I’m more accepting of myself, I think. All of that’s associated with that move far away from the type of hyper-sexualization of this character,” she said. The 36-year-old also noted how things were “changing now” for young female actors within the wake of the #MeToo movement. “Now people, young girls, are becoming a way more positive message, but it has been incredible to be a component of that shift and be able to commence the opposite side and be a component of that old story, but also progress,” she added. “Evolve. I believe it’s pretty cool.” The new Latrodectus mactans movie was original because it is released in May 2020, but that got return because of Covid. it’ll now set out on 7 July within the UK and Ireland, and two days later within the US. The new film isn’t an origin story, but it does precede the events of the last two Avengers movies, Infinity War and Endgame.
