The Queen has recalled presenting the planet Cup trophy in 1966 as she sent her “good wishes” to the Britain team sooner than the Euro 2020 final. She said she hoped that history would record the team’s success but also “the spirit, commitment, and pride with which you’ve got conducted yourselves”. The monarch said she had seen what it meant to the players to win a serious tournament 55 years ago. Gareth Southgate’s team plays Italy at Wembley on Sunday. Her message reads: “Fifty-five years ago I used to be fortunate to present the globe Cup to Bobby Moore and saw what it meant to the players, management, and support staff to succeed in and win the ultimate of a serious international football tournament. “I want to send my congratulations which of my family to you all on reaching the ultimate of the EU Championships, and send my good wishes for tomorrow with the hope that history will record not only your success but also the spirit, commitment, and pride with which you have got conducted yourselves.” Speaking at a conference on Saturday evening, Southgate said: “It has been fantastic to own the letter from the Queen and also the prime minister to all or any of the team – and also the recognition the players have gone about this within the right way. “But we’re in a very final and we’re here to win. Now we wish to travel and produce the trophy home.” Earlier on Saturday, supporters lined the road as they cheered the team bus aloof from the Britain training complex near Burton upon Trent. The team is staying in Watford, closer to Wembley stadium, on Saturday night. Captain Harry Kane said: “To see the fans on the road and see the reception we’ve had, it’s just shown us how big of an occurrence it’s. “We know the way much it means to country fans so we are proud to be representing them and hopefully we will do them proud tomorrow night.” The Queen isn’t the sole person wishing the Britain team well, with Kane revealing that actor Tom Cruise had called the squad. He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “We actually had Tom Cruise get up-to-date yesterday evening. You get everyone who loves football.” Kane added: “We were fortunate enough to possess a watch of 1 of his films, so I believe he was up here within the UK and he just dialed in and Facetimed us just to wish us the simplest as a gaggle. so was nice of him. “I’m undecided if he is going to be there at the ultimate or not, but football is such an enormous part of the globe and it’s nice to possess that support.”
