The NSW Premier says anyone from one of Victoria’s coronavirus hotspots is “not welcome” into the state and that people should assume everyone from Melbourne has the virus.

As Victoria struggles with spikes in COVID-19 cases, Gladys Berejiklian has urged NSW residents to reject visitors from south of the border.

“I’m very concerned about what’s happening in Victoria,” she said.

“Do not allow anyone from a hotspot in Melbourne or from greater Melbourne to come into your home — you have the right to say no.”

NSW Health announced this morning that non-essential travel between Melbourne and NSW was discouraged and that it had implemented restrictions on Melbourne travellers from entering “high-risk settings” such as aged-care facilities.

“Further restrictions may be implemented as the situation evolves,” it said.

The Premier said NSW would not consider closing its borders with Victoria “at this stage”.

“NSW has kept its borders open during the entire [pandemic] time and we have managed to get to this place through vigilance and hard work of the community,” she said.
