GWS Giants stars Toby Greene and Matt De Boer have withdrawn from their AFL match against the Sydney Swans and been forced into isolation in chaotic scenes at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast.
A group of 15 players and staff from AFL clubs Sydney Swans and GWS Giants won’t be involved in this evening’s match in Queensland after they were re-classified as tier 2 contacts.
Six Swans and nine Giants players and staff attended the rugby test between the Wallabies and France at AAMI Park in Melbourne on Tuesday night, the teams relocated to Queensland later in the week ahead of Victoria’s latest COVID-19 outbreak.
The section they sat in at AAMI Park was re-classified as a tier 2 exposure site on Sunday meaning all those in their area needed to get a COVID-19 test and isolate until a negative test is received.
The AFL confirmed the situation in a media release on Sunday evening which will force both clubs to make late changes to the selected sides.
The AFL said the Queensland Government was notified and it was acting under their directions while the match will still proceed as scheduled at 6.10pm AEST.
