ِAustralian woman – Nesrena Elyoum
Local police are investigating the death of a 31-year-old woman after her body was found.
The woman was killed while hiking outside the Georgian capital, Tbilisi.
The body of the adult woman was found on Saturday, having been missing since Friday noon local time.
The woman was on the phone when she was attacked, according to online posts by those who later searched for her, and told the friend she was talking to that she had asked someone to let her go.
It is believed that she travelled abroad for several years and was working in Georgia as an English teacher.
The killing deeply disturbed the picnic communities and local ex-pats, who organized searches after the woman had not returned from a picnic in Mtatsminda Park.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed that it provides consular assistance to the woman’s family.
“The Australian government extends its deepest condolences to the family of an Australian woman whose death is being investigated by the authorities in Tbilisi, Georgia,” an Australian government spokesperson said.
An officer from the Australian Embassy in Turkey (accredited to Georgia) travelled to Tbilisi to contact the Georgian authorities.
